DIRECTION

Occasionally when I get the time, I will try to get a project together to direct.

Seems to be every couple of years, so not exactly prolific.

Recently it has been music videos, but I have also made a couple of no budget shorts and other things.

Although my focus is generally always on Production Design and Art Direction, stepping into the directors seat every now and then can really be a great change of perspective, and a serious challenge!

pHOTOGRAPHY

I have been taking photos as long as I can remember. I grew up in a family where a camera was always there, to capture a special moment.

I got my first camera, a point and shoot 35mm, in the early 80’s and I was never without one since.

I still love shooting with film, these days it’s with a Contax G1, or Olympus XA.

I spent the last decade with a Sony A7R attached to my hip, on location around the world.

Thanks to smart phones and their smart cameras, taking a photo now seems to have lost a bit of magic. So for me, picking up a camera sparks that magic.

I have no real style, just enjoy shooting what interests me. I spent most of my work life shooting buildings and interiors, so I seem to gravitate to people when ever I am inspired to push the button.

Recently I have enjoyed shooting a bunch of campaigns for Only Lovers, the fashion brand my wife I set up a few years back.

DRAWING

I spent a lot of my early career harbouring the secret, that I can’t draw (like more than a few designers).

And with so many incredibly talented designers, seemingly able to draw masterpieces with a flick of the pencil, I was more than a little intimidated.

Slowly pushed myself into it, or to be correct, pushed the pencil onto the blank sheet of paper. And now I just really enjoy drawing when I have the time. I’m all over the place in terms of style and technique, love copying others and finding our how they approach a drawing.

Like with a camera, I am always drawn to people, and the odd robot.

Happy to say that now, I can draw. And most jobs begin with a pencil and paper, finding the image that I can then take to the computer.

These are a few of my drawings.
